Keyboard 101 : Starting with chords

Let’s start learn keyboard, starting with chords. The simplest idea is to remember this :

There are two type of hand : 3 tones and 4 tones. The pattern are 1, 3, 5 and 1, 3, 5, 7 for each type. For left hand you can use :

  • 1. last finger
  • 3. point/middle finger
  • 5. thumb finger
and
  • 1. last finger
  • 3. middle finger
  • 5. point finger
  • 5. thumb finger
We never use ring finger at this moment.

Above example is C Major (1, 3, 5) and C Major 7 (1, 3, 5, 7).

Respectively after CM in 3 tones type :

CM, Dm (minor), Em, F, G, Am

In 4 tones type :

CM7, Dm7, Em7, FM7, G7, Am7

We haven’t used black tuts yet, so those key/chord called white tones.

Lets explore more! there are another pattern that you should know :

in 3 tones type there are :

…M 1, 3, 5

…m 1, 3b, 5

from major to minor you only need to step down 3rd tuts half tone (3 mol)

in 4 tones type there are :

… M7 … 1, 3, 5, 7

… 7 …… 1, 3, 5, 7b

… m7 … 1, 3b, 5, 7b

so from major to major 7 (dominant) you need to add one finger (for 7)

then from Major 7 to 7 (dominant) you need to step down 7 tuts half tone.

lastly,  from 7 to minor 7 you need to step down also the 2nd tuts half tone. just like from Major to minor in 3 tones type.

That’s all for today. Enjoy
